Húsavík city overview

Húsavík works best as a base in Iceland when you anchor days around Whale watching harbour, Husavik Whale Museum and GeoSea baths. Use those sights to understand the city's history, street life and visitor rhythm. Húsavík International Airport handles the main arrival flow, so hotel choice should balance the centre, transfer time and day-trip plans.

City history

According to Landnamabok, Swedish Viking Gardar Svavarsson wintered at Husavik around 870.
Nattfari and two enslaved people were left behind when Gardar departed, creating an early farm settlement.
Husavikurkirkja, the town's well-known wooden church, was built and became a key local landmark.
Until 2004, Husavik served as an export harbour for silica extracted from the Lake Myvatn area.
The name Husavik means bay of houses, probably referring to Gardar's homestead at the site.
Modern Husavik is shaped by fishing, tourism, whale watching, GeoSea baths and its harbour on Skjalfandi bay.
