History
Turco-Egyptian and later Mahdist rule reached the southern Nile basin.
The region was administered separately under Anglo-Egyptian rule.
The first civil war was fought against the Khartoum government.
The second civil war ended with a comprehensive peace agreement.
Independence came on 9 July after a referendum.
