Victoria city overview

Victoria is Seychelles' compact capital on Mahé, often noted as one of the world's smallest capital cities, mixing colonial architecture with Creole markets. First-time visitors should browse fresh spices and fish at Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, photograph the miniature Victoria Clock Tower, and wander the Botanical Gardens' giant tortoises. Seychelles International Airport lies a short drive south, and Victoria makes an easy base before heading to Mahé's beaches.

City history

France claimed the Seychelles islands before the settlement that became Victoria developed on Mahe.
French colonists settled the area that later became Victoria, establishing the first town foundation on Mahe.
The British renamed the settlement Victoria after Queen Victoria; it had previously been known as L'Etablissement.
Seychelles became a separate Crown colony, making Victoria the administrative centre of the islands.
Seychelles became independent, and Victoria continued as the capital of the new republic.
Modern Victoria concentrates the port, government offices, markets and cultural institutions of Seychelles.
