About the event
Festival au Désert began in 2001 in northern Mali, drawing on Tuareg gathering traditions that combine music, poetry, dance and community exchange. Its 2012 edition outside Timbuktu became the last locally held festival before conflict forced the organisers into exile. The festival’s own information site says that the organisers continue to develop tours and concerts with Malian artists rather than presenting the original desert gathering.
