History

Duklja emerged as the first Montenegrin state on the Adriatic.
Zeta succeeded Duklja under the Balšić lords.
Rule passed to the prince-bishops of Cetinje.
Danilo I made Montenegro a secular principality.

The Kingdom of Montenegro emerged, giving the area a defined monarchical state structure.
