Kampala city overview

Kampala is Uganda's hilly capital, spread across seven hills above the shores of Lake Victoria. First-time visitors should tour the UNESCO-listed Kasubi Tombs of the Buganda kings, browse crafts and produce at Owino Market, and photograph the lotus-shaped Bahá'í Temple. Entebbe International Airport sits about 40 kilometres south on the lakeshore, and Kampala's markets, music and traffic-filled energy make it a lively East African base.

In 1906, the boundary of Kampala was set as a three-mile radius from the “present Nakasero Fort” at Old Kampala, and the Kampala Local Sanitary Board was designated as the authority for urban administration.

Kampala originally referred to only the present-day Old Kampala hill, on whose summit Fort Lugard was located, and the initial headquarters of the British colonial authorities in the soon to be Uganda Protectorate.
Hence the name "Kampala" came to refer to this initial British colonial settlement that would later on spread out from the occupied Old Kampala hill near the pre-existing Kibuga (capital) of the Buganda Kingdom.
Captain Lugard would, later on, be allocated the Kampala hill that would soon be known as Old Kampala, and on which he built a fort.
The land in Buganda's Kibuga (capital), including Mengo Hill and Makerere Hill, was allocated to the young Kabaka, the Baganda colonial collaborators, etc., under mailo and freehold.
