History
Portuguese sailors named the Wouri estuary Rio dos Camaroes, giving the country its name.
Germany established the Kamerun protectorate.
The territory was split into French and British mandates after the First World War.
French Cameroun became independent on 1 January.
British Southern Cameroons joined, forming a federal state.
A referendum replaced the federation with a unitary republic.
