The Comrades Marathon, first run in 1921 as a tribute to South African soldiers who died in the First World War, is the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon, run over roughly 90 kilometres between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The race alternates direction each year between an 'up run' and a 'down run'.
