About the event
Greek Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday 2 May 2027, five weeks after the Western date - the Orthodox churches in Greece set it by the Julian calendar, which is why the gap changes from year to year and can run from one to five weeks. It is a national holiday, and the days around it empty Athens as people leave for their home villages.
Good Friday is the quiet half: the bier is dressed during the day and carried through the streets from about nine in the evening, with the congregation following behind it. Holy Saturday reverses it. People arrive from ten or eleven at night, the church lights go out shortly before midnight, and the flame passes from the priest's candle through the whole crowd - then the bells and the fireworks.
Athens on 2 May 2027 is not the usual Athens. Orthodox Easter falls five weeks after the Western date, the city empties as people leave for their home villages, and what is left is a string of parish churches where the same thing happens at the same minute - every light out, then a single flame spreading across the square.
