The story behind the day

26 March marks Bangladesh Independence Day, commemorating the declaration of independence in 1971 after the Pakistan army launched a crackdown in East Pakistan. The date began the Liberation War that led to Bangladesh's birth later that year.

The day became central to national identity because Bangladesh emerged from language struggle, electoral denial, mass violence and war. It is closely linked to Bengali language, secular cultural identity, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the memory of martyrs.

Today Independence Day is marked with flag-raising, wreaths at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, parades, concerts, school events and patriotic songs. Visitors see red-green flags, public monuments, flowers and a strong language of sacrifice and freedom.

Across Bangladesh, the day is emotional and public. Families gather, television shows liberation programmes, and food such as biryani, bhuna, pitha and tea connects the national story to home life.

The Bangladeshi flag
Bangladesh flag

The Bangladeshi flag has a green field with a red disc slightly toward the hoist. Green represents the land and vitality of Bangladesh, while the red disc symbolises the rising sun and the blood shed in the Liberation War. Its simplicity makes it one of Asia's most recognisable flags.

Bangladeshi celebration food is rich, rice-based and river-influenced, with fish, beef, lentils, mustard, sweets and tea at the centre of gatherings.
