About the event
First held in 1895, the Venice Biennale's art exhibition is the oldest event of its kind and the model most other biennials copied. It runs on two tracks: national pavilions in the Giardini, each country curating its own show, and a large themed international exhibition in the Arsenale's former rope factory. The Golden Lion is its top award.
