Royal Ascot is Britain's most prominent flat-racing meeting, held annually since 1711 under Queen Anne's founding patronage and still attended by the reigning monarch. Its strict formal dress code - morning suits and elaborate hats are effectively mandatory in the Royal Enclosure - has made the meeting as much a fashion and social event as a sporting one.
