About the event

Around ten bonfires are lit across Reykjavik on 31 December 2026, most from 20:30 and Skerjafjordur at 21:00, and the city decides before noon that day whether the wind allows them at all. There is no official fireworks display: what fills the sky at midnight is bought and set off by residents, largely as a fundraiser for the volunteer rescue squads.

Reykjavik does not put on a show - it lets the city do it. Around ten neighbourhood bonfires are lit from 20:30, people walk between them, and at midnight the sky fills with fireworks bought by residents rather than fired by the city. The scale comes from the fact that firework sales are the volunteer rescue squads' main fundraiser.

Before noon on 31 December the city checks the forecast and decides whether the bonfires will be lit at all; wind above 10 m/s cancels them. From 20:30 the fires are lit across the neighbourhoods, Skerjafjordur last at 21:00. Fireworks and flares are not allowed at the bonfire sites - sparklers and spark-free torches are. At midnight the fireworks go up from gardens and streets across the city.
