About this day
Holi is the Hindu spring festival of colours, celebrated on the full moon of the month of Phalguna and marking the end of winter as well as the triumph of good over evil. The night before, communities light Holika Dahan bonfires recalling the story of Prahlada, saved from the fire that consumed the demoness Holika. The following day is the part known worldwide: coloured powder and water thrown freely in the streets, across castes and social divisions that are deliberately relaxed for the occasion. The festival is bound up with Krishna, who according to legend coloured Radha's face to resolve his self-consciousness about his own dark skin, which is why the Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan holds the most elaborate observances. Barsana stages lathmar Holi, in which women drive men off with sticks in a ritual re-enactment. It is celebrated across India and Nepal and by diaspora communities worldwide. The 2027 date is 22 March.
