About the event
Dia de Muertos is a celebration rather than a mourning, built on the belief that the dead return to visit. Families build ofrendas laden with marigolds, sugar skulls and the food the departed liked best. UNESCO lists the tradition as intangible cultural heritage, and Mexico City now stages a large parade alongside the domestic and graveside observances.
