About this day
Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha, three events that tradition places on the same full-moon day of the lunar month of Vesakha. It is the most significant date in the Buddhist calendar and was formally recognised by the United Nations in 1999 as a day of international observance. Practice varies by country and school but shares a common shape: temple visits before dawn, offerings of flowers, candles and incense whose fading is meant as a reminder of impermanence, and acts of generosity such as free food stalls and donations. Sri Lanka mounts illuminated pandals and lantern displays through the streets; Indonesia gathers thousands of monks at Borobudur for a procession and lantern release; Thailand marks Visakha Bucha with candlelit circumambulation of temple halls; Singapore, Malaysia and Nepal observe it as a public holiday. Many observers keep a vegetarian diet for the day. The 2027 observance falls on 1 May.
