The story behind the official birthday
The United Kingdom does not have one universally celebrated national day in the same sense as many countries. The closest recurring state occasion is the Sovereign's Official Birthday, marked in London by Trooping the Colour.
The ceremony grew from military practice into a national royal event, with Guards regiments parading their colours before the monarch. Its date is chosen for early summer rather than the monarch's actual birthday.
Today the day is most visible in central London: military bands, Household Division uniforms, crowds along The Mall and a royal balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace. Across the UK, national identity is also expressed through separate days for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Union Flag combines the crosses of Saint George, Saint Andrew and Saint Patrick, representing the historic union of England, Scotland and Ireland. It is used as the flag of the United Kingdom and is central to state ceremonies.
State celebrations in the UK usually mean picnic food, street-party dishes and classic British baking rather than one official national meal.

UK culture on state occasions
The official birthday is a state ceremony more than a street festival, but it shows the ceremonial side of the UK clearly.
