The story behind the day

5 Iyar in the Hebrew calendar marks Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, commemorating the declaration of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv in 1948. On the Gregorian calendar it falls in April or May and changes each year.

The day became Israel's central national celebration because it marks Jewish sovereignty after centuries of diaspora and shortly after the Holocaust. It is also inseparable from the 1948 war and from Palestinian memory of displacement, which makes the date deeply contested beyond Israeli society.

Today Yom Ha'atzmaut begins immediately after Memorial Day, shifting from mourning to celebration. Visitors see torch-lighting, fireworks, concerts, air force flyovers, flags, barbecues and public gatherings in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and towns across the country.

Across Israel, the day has a strong outdoor rhythm: families grill in parks, beaches fill, blue-and-white flags hang from balconies, and the public mood mixes grief, pride, argument and celebration.
