The story behind the day
Belize celebrates Independence Day on 21 September, marking independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. The date follows St George's Caye Day on 10 September, making September the country's major patriotic month.
The celebrations connect modern independence with older local memory of resisting Spanish control in 1798. Parades, official ceremonies and carnival events make the whole month feel like national season.
Today Belize City, Belmopan and towns across the country fill with flags, marching bands, carnival costumes, food stalls and family events. The holiday reflects Belize's Caribbean and Central American character at the same time.

The Belizean flag is blue with red stripes and a central coat of arms showing mahogany workers and national symbols. It is one of the few national flags with human figures in the design.
Belizean Independence food is mixed and multicultural, drawing from Creole, Maya, Garifuna and Mestizo kitchens.
