The story behind the day
Barbados celebrates Independence Day on 30 November, marking independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. Since 2021 the same date also marks the country becoming a republic.
The anniversary is part of National Independence Festival of Creative Arts season, connecting statehood with music, literature, schools and community performance. The republic transition added a new layer to the date without replacing its independence meaning.
Today Bridgetown and communities across the island mark the day with flags, lights, concerts, parades and family meals. November becomes a month of blue, gold and black national colours.

The Barbadian flag has ultramarine and gold vertical bands with a broken trident in the centre. The trident symbolises the break from colonial rule and the island's relationship with the sea.
Independence meals in Barbados often mean Sunday-style island cooking, flying fish, cou-cou and sweet bakes.
