The story behind the day
The Bahamas celebrates Independence Day on 10 July, marking independence from the United Kingdom in 1973. The date represents the birth of the modern Bahamian state after centuries of colonial rule.
The holiday quickly became a national marker built around flag-raising, church services, official speeches and Junkanoo-style cultural performance. It also sits in the middle of a summer festival season.
Today Nassau and the Family Islands celebrate with fireworks, parades, concerts, sailing, food stalls and family reunions. Blue, gold and black decorations make the island setting part of the celebration.

The Bahamian flag has aquamarine and gold bands with a black triangle at the hoist. Aquamarine represents the sea, gold the sand and sun, and black the strength and determination of the people.
Independence Day food is bright, coastal and social, with conch, fish, peas and rice and sweet island desserts.
